For centuries artists, inventors and illusionists have explored optical deception through shadow theatre, anamorphosis, mirrors, perspective devices, magic lanterns and pre-cinematic apparatus. Drawing extensively on the extraordinary collection of German experimental filmmaker Werner Nekes, this richly illustrated volume examines the history of illusion and visual manipulation from the Renaissance to contemporary installation art.
