Meer info Light and shadow, reflection, colour and motion are among the fundamental elements of visual art and perceptual experience. For centuries artists, inventors and illusionists have explored optical deception through shadow theatre, anamorphosis, mirrors, perspective devices, magic lanterns and pre-cinematic apparatus. Drawing extensively on the extraordinary collection of German experimental filmmaker Werner Nekes, this richly illustrated volume examines the history of illusion and visual manipulation from the Renaissance to contemporary installation art. Alongside historical optical instruments and rare printed material, the publication includes works by contemporary artists such as Christian Boltanski, Carsten Höller, Tony Oursler, Markus Raetz, Anthony McCall and Ann Veronica Janssens. The book explores the unstable boundary between perception and deception and demonstrates how illusion has remained central to visual culture across centuries. The volume is organised around the historical development of optical entertainment, perceptual experimentation and the archaeology of moving images. Early chapters discuss camera obscura devices, catoptric mirrors, peep shows, perspective constructions, anamorphic engravings and seventeenth-century scientific demonstrations. Subsequent sections analyse shadow projection, magic lantern spectacles, phantasmagoria, stereoscopy, chronophotography and the mechanical origins of cinema through devices such as the phenakistiscope, zoetrope and praxinoscope. The catalogue reproduces manuscripts, engravings, scientific diagrams, optical toys, rare books and experimental apparatus from the Werner Nekes Collection, one of the most important collections dedicated to pre-cinema technologies and visual illusion. Contemporary artworks integrated throughout the publication demonstrate how modern artists continue to investigate perception, spatial instability, reflected imagery and visual paradox. Essays by Laurent Mannoni and Marina Warner contextualise illusion within art history, media archaeology, psychology of perception and the cultural fascination with deception, wonder and spectacle. The publication combines exhibition catalogue, historical study and visual reference work on the evolution of optical media and illusionistic art.
