| Meer info | A profusely illustrated book produced to Taschen's high standards, featuring the weird and wonderful dream-like 'symbolist' artworks of some of the nineteenth centuries most creative minds. It was in France and Belgium, the cradle of literary Symbolism, where Symbolist painting was born. It manifested itself in the cultural space opened up by the poetry of Baudelaire and Mallarme and by the operas of Wagner. Symbolist painters wanted to express 'The Idea', which is why the imaginary plays an important role in their work. Dream was their credo, with a fanatical hatred they detested impressionism, realism, naturalism and the scientific. The main principle of Symbolism was to achieve harmony between all the different forms of art, or even to realize the total work of art (Gesamtkunstwerk) that Wagner had dreamed of. What we are now rediscovering is this: Symbolistic painting is essential to our understanding of modern art. |
