| Meer info | First published in 1948, this is a classic travel book around the Netherlands by an English author of a period in Dutch history that has disappeared - though not quite entirely! The author - Sir Sacheverell Reresby Sitwell, 6th Baronet - was a famous socialite, raconteur and celebrated writer of his time. In this charming, beautifully written narrative of his travels across the Netherlands with acute insights and observations of the Dutch people, art, culture, history and landscape, Sitwell evokes a unique world still emerging from the travails of the second world war. Travelling by turns in each of the Dutch provinces, Sitwell's writing reflects his romance with the country: "The moment now approaches when we have to depart from this beautiful and lovely Friesland, probably for ever, and there could be no picture of it to last longer in the mind thatn that interminable stretch along the top of the dyke"..... "Now fof the true Holland. For this is something more than the trams and bicycles of Amsterdam. We want to see the dykes and polders, the fishermen in baggy trousers and the old harbours of the Zuyder Zee." This 1952 edition contains colour plates and many period black & white photos ('A typical dog cart, Walcheren' and many more such like photos of a disappearing way of life). Sitwell's 'The Netherlands' is a true collectors item for bibliophiles and collectors of Dutch ephemera. |
