| Meer info | In 'A Mouthful of Air' (1992), Anthony Burgess, a lifelong linguist and prolific writer, provides an eloquent and wide-ranging survey of language. Drawing inspiration from a W.B. Yeats quote about a poem being "made out of a mouthful of air," Burgess argues that spoken language is the primary, essential form of human communication, with writing being a secondary transcription. As a novelist - among his many novels are 'A Clockwork Orange' and 'Earthly Powers') Burgess connects his linguistic analysis to literary and cultural history. He examines Shakespearean pronunciation, the use of language in the Bible, and the politics of speech. Moreover, as a composer as well as a writer, Burgess draws parallels between the human voice and a musical instrument, even linking his passion for language to his discovery of Debussy's music as a teenager. The book functions as both a celebration and an exploration of the oral nature of language, covering topics from phonetics to the evolution of English. |
