The book uses the metaphor of water - flowing naturally and effortlessly around obstacles - to explain the Tao, or "The Way," which is the underlying, unnameable process of the universe. Watts was a prominent figure in bridging Eastern and Western philosophy and presents Taoism not as a rigid dogma but as a practical guide for living in harmony with nature. He argues that just as water embodies flexibility, adaptability, and quiet strength, humans can achieve a more balanced and fulfilled life by: - Going with the flow and adapting spontaneously to life's circumstances, rather than struggling against the current; - Letting go of ego and control, which often leads to stress and imbalance; - Living in the present moment, trusting that the natural flow will guide us. He uses the watercourse analogy to explain several foundational Taoist concepts such as 'wu wei', yin and yang, interconnectedness (the dissolution of the perceived self into the universe).
