Clean inside and outside, with solid binding, gilt lettering on front board and spine, hinges without cracks, maps and plans correctly folded, two silk bookmarks; with a large folding map inside its back pocket. Though the rear map has two small creases the rest of this copy seems unused. (Hinrichsen F216). It bears a small ink stamp of Nazi Luftwaffe on title page (please see the pictures). The first and only edition in French, it is considered a part of the famous Baedeker "Orient Quartet" (along with Konstantinopel, Egypt and Palestine and Syria). It describes the ancient Greece as well as the modern one. It contains the identification of the Homeric islands, towns, etc according to the historians theories' and archaeological research up until 1910. It contains one chapter on the art of the ancient Greece; two plates showing architectural details and one complete introduction to the (modern) Greek language. A wonderful copy of one of the most outstanding Baedekers. |
