| Meer info | First Latin edition, translated from the Spanish first edition (Empresas morales, Prague, 1581) by L. Camerarius. Our edition is the first edition to have the fine engravings by Schott, who illustrated no other books. A German edition was published in Berlin in 1698. The engravings depict a great variety of subjects, among which ships, an elephant, two volcanic eruptions and Noah’s ark landed on mount Ararat. Juan de Borja (1533-1606) was a Spanish count (de Mayalde y de Ficallo) who served as ambassador to Germany and as Privy Councillor of King Phillip II. This book made him the first Spanish writer of an original emblem book. - Provenance: Stephani Vali 1756 in ink on lower paste down. - Literature: Landwehr, German Emblem Books 137; Praz 282; Brunet I, 1117; Cicognara 1857 (erroneously mentions 201 ill.); Emblem Books in Leiden 62; Graesse I, 497; Palau 33098. - Condition: Prelims and some leaves mediocre browning. Some old anotations in ink on p.184-198. Vellum a bit soiled. Else a very fine copy with strong impressions. |
