| Meer info | "Lawrence Clark Powell (1906-2001) was many things: librarian, writer, collector. To make it simple he would always refer to himself as a "bookman." Powell seemed to always be in the right place at the right time, growing up with Ward Ritchie (fellow bookman and printer extraordinaire) in Southern California where the two of them were part of an intimate group in the late 1920s and early 1930s that include M.F.K. Fisher, Gordon Newell, and Gloria Stuart. Powell was an early biographer of Robinson Jeffers and convinced Rockwell Kent to draw the chapter heads for his biography of Jeffers -- only to have to rewrite the first sentences later after he revised the book to match the original chapter heads. Powell was also an early bibliographer of the work of D. H. Lawrence. Powell's legacy stands on three pillars: building the collections of both the UCLA Library (renamed The Powell Library in 1966) and the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library; training future librarians via library schools at UCLA and the University of Arizona; and the sheer volume of articles, books, and other privately published material he left behind. Powell was a writer who seemed to have a knack for getting published or having published (at his own expense) nearly everything he wrote".
