| Meer info | The success of the fracturing process in the oil and gas industry depends on our ability to define the hydraulic fracture geometry. To have a method of measurement for characterizing completely the fracture dimensions from a single well in reliable way, will be a primordial importance, in term of economical cost and better oil recovery. This research has focused on the optimisation of the sonic logging frequency and source-receivers configuration, and on the improvement and development of modelling for interpreting field data issued from the interaction of the Stoneley and body waves with borehole fractures. A theoretical and experimental work on the effect of a near-wellbore fracture on the Stoneley wave reveals a sensitivity of this wave attenuation to the formation elasticity, fracture width and finite fracture length. For a transverse plane fracture, the existence of a reflected tip wave is experimentally emphasized; its time arrival and amplitude can respectively provide an estimate of the fracture length and thickness. Moreover, a receiver located at the fracture opening and the use of a field frequency range of 20 ââ¬â 100 Hz for the measurement should optimize the detection of the reflected tip wave and the recording of the fracture resonant frequency, related to the fracture length. Finally, the possibility of evaluating the thickness and extension of hydraulic fracture with the scattered body waves is investigated numerically. The scattered wavefield is modelled by applying equivalent surface sources along the fracture surface. These surface sources correspond to the linear slip model in which both transverse and normal compliances are used to describe the fracture. The computed scattered wavefield present a dependency on the fracture size, fracture profile, fracture compliance and method used to approximate the fracture effect. Thus, the Born approximation, commonly used in the scattering problem, can lead to underestimate the fracture dimensions. |
