| Meer info | Very nearly all the POW and escape reminincences of World War II, especially by men from Great Britain, have been written by officers ; a few by W.O's and N.C.O's. It is therefore refreshing to come upon reminincences written by a private soldier, in most ways " an average sort of chap " (if there is such a thing ), no hero, no prodigy of ingenuity and resourcefulness, yet no introspective. Ewart Jones was a young man in his early twenties when he joined the Army, just before the outbreak of war. The following May he was sent to France but before the month had ended he was a prisoner and on his way to Poland. In no time at all, he attempted to escape, with Bill, a brash little cockney from Bermondsey. They made good progress and were free for a fortnight but eventually they were recaptured. Twice more he made a bid for freedom, once with two others, and once alone, but the end of the war found him still a prisoner. |
