While good composition, interesting colours and strong forms should all feature in a photograph that is to be painted from, it is important not to reproduce an exact carbon copy as best results may not always be achieved. Instead, Tony shows how to adapt the image: cropping, adding in or omitting elements, altering the light and colours, and even using more than one photograph to pick out visual references. Various media are covered: watercolour, oils, pastels, gouache, acrylic, coloured pencils and egg tempera. The attributes of each are described in detail throughout the book.
