| Meer info | The viewpoints of 18 American and 7 European writers on the cause and cure of stuttering are summarized in brief chapters, in most cases edited by the writers concerned. The interpretations of stuttering include psychoanalytic, conditioned response, mental imagery, semantic, hereditary predisposition, cerebral dominance, and others. Recommended therapies are divergent, some favoring and others warning against specific training in speech habits. An appendix on procedures in a clinic for stutterers indicates that the author favors an eclectic view, applying whichever theories or therapeutic procedures appear relevant to the individual case. Although considerable progress has been made in meeting the basic problem, the author concludes that no single theory appears to fit all cases and no single therapy to cure all stutterers. |
