"During the baroque and rococo periods in Europe certain symbolic representations were accepted by artists and poets as expressing basic ideas and formed an international language of metaphor (or iconography) which permeated" the arts. This "symbolic lingua franca" was best interpreted by Italian mythopoet Cesare Ripa who published his influential Iconologia in 1593. Here he presented a "codification of symbolic attributes associated with various ideas" and included a wealth of allusions from classical literature, the Judeo-Christian tradition, ancient Egypt, and other sources. Ripa's book was instantly embraced, going through numerous editions over the next century. Ripa's Iconologia wasn't illustrated. Many publishers and editors added illustrations. The best of these, according to Dover, was by Hertel in 1760, the Historiae et Allegoriae out of Hapsburg. |
