The congregation, founded in 1902, was the first Orthodox congregation to construct its own synagogue in Shreveport. It remains in existence as the only traditional Jewish congregation in the region. Its cemetery is listed on the National Historic Register. The book discusses the evolution of local Jewish practice over the course of the 20th century. Of particular interest is the way in which female participation in the ritual has gradually increased, paralleling this movement in the larger American society. The book also deals with local responses to such major world events as the Holocaust and the birth of the modern state of Israel.
