A lengthy preface summarizes differing theories of the Revolution, and each subsequent chapter contains an overview of events, a chronology, and eyewitness testimony. The latter consists of excerpts from letters, memoirs, speeches, and other documents in order to show the full spectrum of reactions by contemporaries. These excerpts are brief and do not include complete citations, making it difficult for them to be quoted in student papers. This is a history of emotions rather than dry facts.
