The computer has thus enabled people without the ability to draw so much as the simplest design to produce pictures that are both intricate and visually sstisfying. Artists generally have to rely on collaborston with engineers to produce computeraided pictures, though more and more are now teaming computer programming, and special computer languages are being devised to meet the requirements of art departments of universities. This fascinating book shows how computers may be used to produce drawings in black and white and in colour, as well as to make animated films and sculptures, and describes many of the represontative achievements in the first decade of this activity. It will stimulate every reader to question the established definitions and boundaries of creative activity. Jasia Reichardt has been Assistant Director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, since 1963. She is particularly interested in exploring the relationship of the visual arts to society at large. She has organized many major exhibitions, including ‘Cybernetic Serendipity’ for the ICA in 1968. She has written and edited several books on artists, and has recently edited Cybernetics, Intuitions and Art — a unique collection of essays by scientists, philosophers, composers and poets. |
