Yet, besides the welfare issue - although highly relevant in itself - the importance of intrinsic value in animals has to be recognized also. The phrase "intrinsic value", however, is borrowed from human ethics and has for a considerable time been exclusively applied to humanity. If the term is applied to animals, its meaning and import have to be reconsidered: does it apply to individual animals, for example, or whole species? Does if apply to domesticated animals in the same manner as it does to their wild relatives? What are the philosophical implications of the recognition of intrinsic value? This volume contains a philosophical review of the ethical evaulation of animals in terms of intrinsic value. It presents a series of efforts to apply this concept to relevant fields of interest, including biotechnology, conservation of wildlife, scientific research on animals, animal husbandry, and more. Different perspectives are represented and different dilemmas explored. |
