'PUBLISHER'S NOTE During his early years in Pondicherry (1910-12) Sri Aurobindo wrote a series of short stories, but unfortu-nately most of thee manuscripts were destroyed by white ants. List of his early works which he had made suggests that he intended them to be grouped under the title "Idylls of the Occult". The four short stories in this book are the only ones available to us, ant two of them are incomplete. The first three, "The Phantom Hour", "The Door At Abelard" and "The Devil's Mastiff", have a definite occult content; the fourth, "The Golden Bird", is more mystic-symbolic in nature. There is another version of the first story, but only in its beginnings and obviously it was rejected in favor of the second completed version published here. All four stories were first published in various journals of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram between 1951 and 1954. "The Phantom Hour" was also printed in book-form in 1951. In this edition the stories are reproduced in far- simile from "Collected Plays and Short Stories", Volume 7 of the Sri Aurobindo Centenary Library (1971)'. |
