| Meer info | Thomas Babington Macaulay, born in Leicestershire in 1800, was the greatest of all the English Whig historians. Macaulay was the son of an anti-slavery advocate, Zachary Macaulay. He was educated at Cambridge University, where he began in 1818, and during the course of his time there he became interested in the utilitarian philosophy being developed by such thinkers as Jeremy Bentham and Joseph Priestley. After some early success as a writer, he was elected to Parliament in 1830. He later served as a member of the Supreme Council of the East India Company from 1834 to 1838, during which time he reformed the educational system and, almost single-handedly, composed a legal code for the whole of India. After returning to England he became successively Secretary of War (1839-41), Paymaster of the forces (1846-47), an again a Member of Parliament (1839-47, 1852-56). He quickly established a reputation as a distinguished orator and formidable politician. He was raised to the peerage in 1857 as Baron Macaulay of Rothley. |
