At its beginning, it was a critic of social evils - the gap between rich and poor, problems such as the adulteration of goods, sweated labour, dire living conditions for the urban poor, the cruelties of the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834 etc. - but gradually became more middle class, more " respectable". There is a very good anthology of cartoons and, for anyone wishing to refer to one in academic writing, each cartoon is given is full reference - date with day and month as well as year, volume number and page number.
