The story of the Nazi destruction, and rebuilding of Warsaw is legendary (Ciborowski's book). Although Coventry, Hiroshima, Rotterdam, and Stalingrad all suffered damage, Warsaw was the city that the Nazis deilberately set out to destroy. The destruction began in September 1939, when 12 % of the buildings were ruined and 50,000 people perished. By the time the Sovjet forces freed the city in 1945, one fifth of the population had died and Warsaw was completely leveled. |
