In his characteristic and compelling way, the author writes about the historical European search for waterways to the Indies. The story is about Adriaen Block, a brave and adventurous skipper and explorer. When all seems lost and his ship catches fire, Block does not despair. He and his crew are forced to spend the whole winter on Manhattan Island. They build a new ship, and christen it De Onrust (The Unrest). This made Block New York’s first ever shipbuilder. He charted Block Island, which is named after him. Block’s map was the first to apply the name "New Netherland". He is also noted for possibly having named Rhode Island. Overall, this book is a very interesting read. |
