Meer info This is an historical novel set in France in one of the most tragic and bloody periods of the Middle Age. The hero is a troubadour who grows up in the refined and artistic civilization of the thirteenth century Languedoc, in which the great Cathar heresy provoked the frenzy of the inquisition. The author describes in his taut an gripping prose, the massacre, the siege, the burning at the stake, all reflecting with accuracy the tragedy, the horror and the beauty of those days that anticipated the destruction of a culture as advanced as the Renaissance which was not to emerge until three centuries later. The martyrdom of the Cathars is symbolised in the sufferings of the poet hero and his lover, endowed with second sight for which she was persecuted as a heretic by the cruel priest craft. Throughout the desperate struggle between the outlawed Cathar sympathizers and the organised barbarity of those who claimed that they killed for Christ the mind of the hero is seen as a mirror reflecting the battle between light and darkness in the country he loves. His heart is torn between revenge for the brutalities inflicted on his father and his lover, and the Cathar doctrines of love an compassion.
