| Meer info | The Zambian Iron Age comprises the past seventeen centuries of the country's history. This pamphlet presents, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of Zambia's cultural development during this perio. As a prehistorian, the author bases his survey on the evidence of archaeology, but he also draws on the results of linguistic research and on traditional history to produce a truly multidisciplinary account. The Early Iron Age is shown to have come to what is now Zambia from the north, in two distinct streams, between the third and fifth centuries A.D. The inception of the later Iron Age, almost a thousand years ago, is marked by the appearance of pottery traditions which still survive in several areas of the country. David Phillipson was Secretary/Inspector of the Zambia National Monuments Commission from 1964 to 1972. He is now Assistant Director of the Nairobi-based British Institute in Eastern Africa. |
