A lavishly and beautifully designed 'catalogue', feaaturing modern Japanese Kimonos dyed by Itchiku Kubata with a [modern] dye Tsjujigahana as developed by this master of dyeing. Kubota's inspiration has been a type of dye called Tsjujigahana, which was widely used in Japan from the middle of the Muromachi period (1333-1573) until the Momoyama period (1573-1615), but was soon completely replaced by the Yuzen dyes of the Edo period (1615-1668). Tsujigahana was basically an elegant form of Tie-deying, supplemented here and there with handpainted designs and embroidery. Instiead of trying merely to duplicate Tsjujigahana's works, that have been preserved, Itchiku Kubota has developed a modern version of his own, suited to contemporary use. In doing so, he has succeeded by long and patience experimenting in deying modern chemical dyes in many levels-something that was until his time considered impossible. His version of the ancient method, which he calls Itchiku Tsujigahana, has gained wide praise both in Japan and abrroad. |
