| Meer info | - This volume does need expansion after many years, but I have not found any problems with the content, unusual for other works on the subject of mechanical music which change with the wind. Techniques of conservation and repair have changed and should be reviewed, of course, and the author would agree. If you are interested in barrel organs, and who isn't, this is one of the definitive sources for your library. Barrel Organs are the descendents of the oldest church bells of the middle ages, when clocks had no faces and time was told by the chimes (our word "clock" comes from the german word Glocke, meaning bell). The original church bells had large wooden cylinders (barrels) with huge pins sticking out which struck levers attached to ropes that rang the bells high up. These large barrels eventually were adapted to use in reproducing music in organ devices, such as monkey organs and large orchestrions. If none of this makes sense, don't worry, but for those who want to know more, including how these music machines work, buy this book. |
