With the passage of more than 40 years since 1970, devotees of Japanese art and poetry have grown accustomed to plumbing these subjects in considerable depth. To do so, we now have access to spectacular in-depth books that reproduce Hiroshige's Tokaido prints in tandem with superb scholarship, providing context for Hiroshige's still impressive images. This scholarship probes the history of woodblock printing in Japan, Hiroshige's status as a 19th-century giant of the field, and the function of the pre-modern Tokaido Road which provided a series of 50-plus posting stations that led westward from the capital city of Edo (modern Tokyo) to the old capital of Heian-kyo (modern Kyoto). |
