But Jasper wears this knowledge lightly, writing with a gentle sense of humour and candid informality (e.g. 'Is this cutting edge, or are they out where the buses don't run?' he asks of one grower's practices). The book is quite large, and although it is not from a recognized publisher (Jasper's employers, Berry Bros & Rudd, have produced it themselves), it is beautifully laid out - simple, attractive typography and design, perfect-bound hardback with no dust-jacket, and colour maps. Jasper writes very well, and although the book will mainly be bought by knowledgeable wine lovers, there's enough explanation about Burgundy in the brilliant introductory section that even relative novices will find this work accessible. The bulk of the book focuses on the vineyards and producers in Burgundy. The detailed maps are a great help here. Above all, though, as I read I feel that Jasper is acting as my trusted guide through the complexities of this wonderful region. I think he really understands Burgundy - he 'gets' it - and this isn't always the case with people who write on the subject. It's not a cheap book, but it's very good value for money. |
