| Meer info | This is the first modern edition of Fraunce's manuscript treatise, which is a more accurate reflection of what he wrote and intended than the badly printed text of 1588. The edition presents on facing pages a transcription of the Latin text and an English translation. Also included are the additions which Fraunce made to the printed text in the form of two Appendices. For the first time modern cholars will be able to read what Fraunce wrote. The edition has an introduction and notes. The introduction discusses the nature of the manuscript, the relationship between manuscript and the later printed version, noting Fraunce's sources, debts and borrowings. Manning provides an assessment of Fraunce's contribution to the English emblem tradition and his relation to the Sidneys. |
