| Meer info | German text.\nAnalyzes the attitudes of Swiss Catholics during the critical period when Switzerland refused to serve as a refuge for persecuted Jews. Describes traditional anti-Judaism based on the deicide accusation, which was instilled by the Holy Week liturgy and customs and by passion plays. Argues that modern antisemitism formed a continuity with this anti-Judaism. Describes a \"dual antisemitism\": the Church feared Jews as agents of modernism and socialism, but opposed racism as inconsistent with doctrine. It condemned the persecution in Germany, but espoused \"self-defense\" against supposed Jewish dominance in culture and the economy. In the 1930s-40s, with the growing influx of refugees, the majority of Catholics, like other Swiss, supported the government's decision to close the borders in order to prevent \"Überfremdung\" - flooding with strangers (a code word for Jews). Summarizes the publications of influential theologians, and editorials and columns in leading Catholic newspapers and family journals, which inculcated traditional anti-Judaism and often modern antisemitism as well. Declarations of regret for the part played by Catholics and Catholic theology in making the Holocaust possible appeared in Switzerland only in the 1990s. |
