| Meer info | Pp. 39-210 contain the diary of Oestreicher (b. 1894, Karlsbad) covering the period between 1 November 1943 - 22 May 1945. Oestreicher worked as a physician in Karlsbad between 1919-38. In 1938 he moved to Amsterdam and married a Dutch Jewish woman. Oestreicher, his wife, and two of his three daughters were imprisoned in Westerbork. In March 1944 they were deported to Bergen-Belsen. The diary is written in telegraphic style, describing the daily routine in the camps: food, work, notes on diseases and patients and, later, names and numbers of the dead. Stresses problems caused by bad nutrition and hunger. In April 1945 the family was taken on a death march and liberated near Tröbitz. Oestreicher's wife died three weeks later and he died in June, both of them from typhus. The two girls returned to the Netherlands, where they were reunited with a sister who survived in hiding. Pp. 19-38 contain the story of the family until their arrest, written by one of the daughters, Maria Goudsblom-Oestreicher. Pp. 217-280 contain family photographs and facsimiles of documents. |
