| Meer info | Name on title page. Biography of the British general 'Chinese Gordon'. Gordon served in the Crimean war, and was afterwards a commissioner in settling the frontier-line of Turkey in Armenia and Kurdistan. From 1860 to 1862 he was employed with the British troops in China, and commanded the Chinese forces that suppressed the Taiping rebellion in 1863 to 1865. From 1874 to 1876 he was 'Governor-General of the Equator' under the Khedive of Egypt and from 1877 to 1880 governor-general of the Soudan. He was killed leading the Egyptian troops against the Mahdi at Khartoum when it was captured by the native forces in January of 1885. |
