| Meer info | - beschrijving van de eerste drie maanden van de Koreaanse oorlog 1950 -The battle for the Pusan perimeter was one of the most skillful mobile defense operations ever conducted by a U.S. commander. Beginning on July 5, 1950 with the Task Force Smith battle near Osan, Lieutenant General Walton H. Walker's U.S. Eighth Army had suffered an unbroken string of defeats. From Chonan (July 6-8), to Chongju (July 10), to Chochiwon (July 11-12), to the Kum River (July 15-16), and finally to Taejon (July 19-20), the Korean People's Army (KPA, North Korean) continuously pushed Walker's understrength and poorly trained 24th Infantry Division southward down the peninsula. On July 25, meanwhile, the 1st Cavalry Division lost Yongdong. Walker's mission became one of trading space for time, delaying and withdrawing until sufficient forces could be built up in Japan for General Douglas MacArthur's Far East Command to effect a deep turning movement by landing forces at Inchon. By the end of July, however, Walker had run out of space. If his forces withdrew any farther toward the key port of Pusan, he would have insufficient depth with which to maneuver the reserves necessary to counter KPA penetrations, and eventually to mass for a counterattack and breakout. |
