Other voices on gender rassemble le travail de photographes et videastes feminines d'origine culturelle en Afrique, Caraibes et Pacifique, et qui developpent le discours feminin dans leur art. Concue comme partie integrale de l'Ete de la Photographie sur la thematique des relations entre les genres, cette exposition presente le travail d'artistes qui ont contribue de maniere significative a la participation et la visibilite des femmes dans l'art depuis les annees 80. Les oeuvres selectionnees couvrent des sujets et debats actuels sur la question de l'egalite des sexes, l'auto-representation, et le corps et la sexualite, dans le cadre des debats sur l'identite et la culture, a partir d'esthetiques, d'approches conceptuelles et processus creatif innovants. Where we're at ! est un etat des lieux contemporain de diverses pratiques artistiques allant de l'intimiste aux formes d'activisme les plus singulieres. Parmi les artistes inclues : Helene Amouzou (Togo/Belgique), Rehema Chachage (Tanzanie), Angele Etoundi Essamba (Cameroun/Hollande), Cecilia Ferreira (Afrique du Sud), Katia Kameli (Algerie/France), Majida Khattari (Maroc/France), Shigeyuki Kihara (Samoa/Nouvelle Zelande), Micheme Magema (RDC/France), Ato Malinda (Kenya), Zanele Muholi (Afrique du Sud), Maud Sulter (Ghana/Ecosse) et Alberta Whittle (Ecosse/Barbades). Where we're at brings together women photographers and video artists of African, Caribbean and Pacific cultural background, developing gender discourses in their art. Conceived as part of the Summer of Photography 2014 centered on Gender Relations, the project presents the work of practitioners who have made significant contributions to the participation and visibility of women in the arts since the 1980s. The pieces selected for this exhibition address current topics and debates around gender equality, self-representation, body and sexuality, within the frames of cultural and identity politics, through innovative and often challenging aesthetics and conceptual approaches and creative processes. WHERE WE'RE AT! is a contemporary appraisal of diverse artistic experiences ranging from the most intimate to the most singular forms of activism. It also stands as a curatorial positioning on questions relating to exhibiting and collecting gender-focused art practices in the South and global contexts. |
