It is inspired by ancient sculpture, modernism and contemporary popular iconography. The monumental sculptures that Bhabha creates by combining surprising materials oscillate between the recognizable, the human or the animal, and the extra-terrestrial. His powerful and sometimes disturbing works explore themes such as colonialism, war, displacement and memories of place. Huma Bhabha rethinks the traditional forms of figurative sculpture, and reveals anthropomorphic characters whose raw appearance sometimes seems altered or unfinished, and whose often monumental scale reinforces their intensity. For her first institutional exhibition in France, the Pakistani artist is showing a never-before-seen set of sculptures and wall works. Exhibition in partnership with the M Leuven museum. |
