| Meer info | The motif of trompe-l'oeil, optical deception, runs through the entire history of Western art, beginning with the Greco-Roman world and the legendary contest that pitted Zeusi and Parrasius against each other. Different artistic expressions-painting in primis, but also sculpture and applied arts-have never ceased to grapple with the intriguing challenge of mimesis: Just think, among others, of the half-open cabinets of Renaissance wooden inlays, of the worktops on which scagliola and semiprecious stones arrange assortments of objects with a three-dimensional appearance, of the porcelain that disguises tureens and furnishings as vegetables, of the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century ceroplastics of anatomical or botanical form. The rich exhibition curated by Annamaria Giusti includes loans from all over the world, covering a chronological span from the first century B.C. to contemporary times. Analysis of the works on display is complemented in the catalog by essays with which Cristina Acidini, Sybille Ebert-Schifferer, Fauzia Farneti, Marc Fumaroli, Richard Gregory, Miriam Milman and Mark Mitchell investigate the theme of the fiction of the real in all its transversality, between painting, sculpture and architecture. |
