| Meer info | = Luxurious edition of Gogol’s most celebrated work, which is considered one of the crowning achievements of Russian illustrated literature, admired both for the exceptional quality of its illustrations and the captivating design and lay-out. The preparation of this edition spanned five years. The publisher commissioned photographers and artists to travel across Russia, recording authentic images and sketches of the kind of provincial life and peasant architecture that would have been familiar in Gogol’s time (the 1820s-30s). Based on this research a team of 12 artists was commissioned with the illustration of the text. Among these artists were some of the most illustrious figures in book illustration, notably Elena and Nikolai Samokish and Solomko. This 1900 edition became a benchmark for Russian illustrated books - both for its quality and for the scale of collaboration between scholars, artists, and printers.
