Anonymously published work, attributed to Barrett convincingly by Sevin Seydi Rare Books (London): "A loose translation of 'Six weeks at Long's, by a late resident' (1817). This identification has, as far as I know, never been made before. Those few cataloguers faced with this rare book have assumed either that the original is unidentified or that it is a mystification by Defauconpret: after all, he was accused by Quérard II, 418-20, of passing off translations as original works and vice versa, and he was the author of some half dozen original books with very similar titles. This is, however, a genuine translation, indeed of an English satirical roman à clef of considerable interest: published just three weeks before Peacock's Melincourt, and with certain common ground. Le poète lord Léandre is easily recognised, as is Bellair as Beau Brummell, but Perriwinkle is almost certainly Shelley, and there is a good deal of insider gossip that could hardly have been easily picked up in France. To add to the confusion the traditional attribution to Barrett has recently been questioned (D.H.Reiman, introduction to Barrett, All the Talents, NY 1979)." |
