| Meer info | = Sonderabdruck aus der Festschrift zur Feier des 150jährigen Bestehens der Königl. Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen 1901. Carmina Burana, Latin for "Songs from Benediktbeuern" [Buria in Latin]) is a manuscript of 254 poems and dramatic texts mostly from the 11th or 12th century, although some are from the 13th century. The pieces are mostly bawdy, irreverent, and satirical. They were written principally in Medieval Latin, a few in Middle High German and old Arpitan. Some are macaronic, a mixture of Latin and German or French vernacular.Wilhelm Meyer discovered ca.1880 that some pages of the Codex Buranus had mistakenly been bound into other old books. He also was able to revise illegible portions of the text by comparing them to similar works. The specially designed binding gives the opportunity to have the text and the plates open next to each other at the same time.Fine copy. |
