| Meer info | = Rare complete set in first edition, uniformly bound in contemporary vellum. Willem van Ranouw (1670-1723) was a Dutch physician who started to publish this periodical to provide Dutch craftsmen an overview of texts that were published worldwide on innovations and discoveries so that they could benefit from that information. It was published in bi-monthly instalments, resulting in 21 parts, usually bound together in 8 volumes and an index. Ranouw translated these texts himself and commissioned engravers to illustrated the texts. Some chapters include mining technology, jewelry, diamonds, gold, sugar cane, natural history (shells, minerals, plants, insects, snakes), cocoa, astronomy, geology, agriculture, botany, horticulture, but also on selected biblical knowledge, human reproduction, tea, salt, indigo, quinine, places of interest (such as Spitsbergen or the Slave-Coast), etc. Condition: all volumes more or less (faintly) waterstained (vols.1-4 slightly worse); vol.1 a few annotations in pen; vol.4 1 map with tear; index-vol. loose in binding. |
