Etteilla (1738-91) (pseudonym of Jean-Baptiste Alliette), was a French occultist, whose role was fundamental in the development of the esoteric Tarot. He was the first, thanks to his publications, to spread the art of divination with the Tarot to the popular level and to establish the connections between the Tarot, Astrology and the Natural Elements. Around 1788 Etteilla published the first Tarot deck explicitly dedicated to the study of esotericism and its practices, including divination. All previous decks, in fact, up to the Tarot of Marseille, were mainly designed for play. The book "Etteilla, ou manière de se récréer avec un jeu de cartes" was a treatise on the divinatory use of common playing cards, with the use of the "Etteilla" card, which explained the disposition to lay the cards on the table , and the meaning to be attributed to each card on the obverse and reverse, as is still used today in divination. In the preface to the book, Etteilla claims to have learned his method from an Italian, but it is not clear to what extent he intervened directly in assigning the various meanings. He lived as a salesman of antique prints, but it seems that he also worked as a fortune teller, author and teacher. |
