| Meer info | = The Methodist missonary John Williams arrived in Hobart Town in 1817, where he delivered the first Evangelical service in Van Diemen's Land. After a sojourn Sydney, he sailed for the Society Islands (Tahiti) and established a mission on Raiatea. Throughout the next seventeen years he devoted himself to the conversion of Polynesians to Christianity, most notably through his missions in the Cook Islands and Samoa. He returned to England in 1834, where he published both a translation of the New Testament in the Rarotongan language and a hugely successful memoir, Narrative of Missionary Enterprises in the South Sea Islands. He sailed again for Polynesia and Sydney in 1838. In 1839, along with fellow missionary James Harris, he was killed and eaten by cannibals on the island of Erromango in the New Hebrides. Used copy with some tears, occas. soiling, stains, etc. Still a decent copy. |
