The print is taken from the most sought after Dutch edition of Junghuhn's famous work on Java: Java, Zijne Gedaante, Zijn Plantentooi en Inwendige Bouw, which was published by P.N. van Kampen and C.W. Mieling in 1853-54 together with an Atlas containing 11 large coloured lithograph plates measuring ca.33 x 46 cm. and contains larger plates than the German editions. Junghuhn was a German-Dutch doctor, naturalist, explorer and French Foreign Legion surgeon who spent many years in Java. In 1845 he first published his Topographische und Naturwissenschaftliche Reisen durch Java (Madgdeburg, 1845), together with an Atlas of 38 uncoloured topographical plates after his own drawings. |
