| Meer info | = The chapters on Guinea give a fair impression of the life and culture of the people of Guinea in Africa in the eyes of the Dutch. The Dutch once used Elmina to ship thousands of slaves to the West-Indies. Now that the slavetrade had formally been abandoned - in 1863 - the author sees opportunities in developing plantations as the Dutch have done in the East, but now more close by and at a lower cost. Slaves in plantations in Surinam were in fact still forced to work under the supervision of the State for another ten years since 1863. This meant that, although paid, they were still forced to continue working on the plantations until 1873. |
