| Meer info | = An extremely rare volume of this important periodical, created to inform Protestant missionaries of current goings-on in China as well as providing historical and cultural contexts. Rare in any condition. We also hold vol. XIV of the series (in all 20 volumes were published). Final 4 leaves some tears repaired (all text well legible). "The Chinese Repository", the world's first major journal concerned with Chinese culture, language, history and politics. The Repository was edited by Elijah Coleman Bridgman (1801 - 1861), an early Protestant missionary who arrived in China in 1830, prior to the Opium War. Bridgman was the first American "China expert"; in addition to editing the Repository he wrote a history of the United States in Chinese, and as a translator worked with the Chinese government on the first treaty between the US and China. |
