Meer info = A miniature droll depicting two men sat, surrounded by darkness perusing the "Gazzete Extraordinary". Upon the table in front of them sits a clay pipe, a jug, and a pile of papers on which is written "Brussels G[azette]" and "Amsterdam Gazette". The title infers that the two rather drably dressed men are putting the world to rights, while in the background above them a monkey on a chain defecates, alluding to "monkey business", the dishonest and underhand behaviour of politicians. The curator's comment on the current British Museum listing for this print speculates that the print derives from a Dutch or Flemsih painting, and stylistically the figures and setting are very similar to those that feature in Adriaen van Ostade's paintings and etchings. The printer and publisher Carington Bowles (1724 - 1793) was the son of the printer John Bowles, to whom he was apprenticed in 1741. In 1752 until c.1762, they became a partnership known as John Bowles & Son, at the Black Horse, Cornhill, London. Carington left the partnership in order to take over the business of his uncle, Thomas Bowles II in St Paul's Churchyard. When Carington died in 1793 the business passed to his son (Henry) Carington Bowles.
