The Amsterdam-born artist Constant Nieuwenhuijs, better known as Constant, is one of the most important Dutch artists involved with Cobra, together with artists such as Karel Appel and Corneille. Together with Christian Dotremont, Constant was Cobra’s leading theoretician. As co-founder of the Experimental Group he had authored the manifesto the group published in the first issue of its newsletter ‘Reflex’. From the Seventies onwards Constant increasingly concentrated on painting, watercolours and drawings. The work of the Old Masters was an important source of inspiration for him. Constant is remembered as one of the Netherlands’ most skilled post-war artists. |
