| Meer info | = Kawahara Keiga was a Japanese painter specialising in animals, plants and landscapes. With a special permission from the Japanese government Keiga became the only painter who was allowed to go in and out of Deshima, the Dutch trading post in the harbour of Nagasaki, Japan, and the only foreign trade-settlement for Westerners from 1641 till 1859. Keiga learned western painting techniques at the settlement from Carl Hubert de Villeneuve. Keiga eventually travelled to Edo with some of his Dutch patrons and was subsequently accused of espionage and persecuted. Captain Jan Cock Blomhoff (1779-1853) was the head of VOC in Japan and director of Deshima between 1817 and 1824. He and his family were one of the very few Westerners living in Japan in early nineteenth century and therefore objects of understandable curiosity. |
