Lebèque et Sacré fils - and another counterfeit edition was also published in Brussels by Lebe`gue et Sacre´ fils the same year. This edition not in WorldCat. Authorship doubtful; ascribed to Alfred Lucas, by Quérard (Les superchéries littéraires dévoilées. Eugene Vidocq was an adventurer and detective who helped create the 'secret police' in France and is considered the father of modern criminology and first private detective. The mystery cases he brings are largely fictitious and regarded as the earliest detective stories. It is believed Vidocq inspired Edgar Allan Poe to create the first detective in fiction, C. Auguste Dupin, who appeared in what is also considered one of the first detective stories ever: "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" (1841). His character also influenced writers as Honoré de Balzac, Victor Hugo, Eugène Sue and Alexandre Dumas père. Dismissed in 1832 from the "Surete Nationale" for a theft that he allegedly organised, Vidocq created a police agency 'Police de Sûreté", the prototype of modern detective agencies. Joints and spine-ends slightly rubbed/ worn. Upper narrow margins vaguely waterstained. |
